Backup for cPanel: A Complete Guide to Safeguarding Your Website Data

Learn everything about cPanel backups including best practices, automated tools, manual methods, and ServerMO's expert solutions for secure data protection on cPanel servers.

Compatible with cPanel versions 124 and above

Keeping regular backups of your cPanel hosting account is one of the most important practices for securing your website’s files, databases, and configurations. Whether you're running a blog, business site, or client hosting environment, having an up-to-date cPanel backup ensures you're always prepared for emergencies like accidental deletions, hacks, or system failures.

What Is the Backup Interface in cPanel?

The cPanel Backup interface is a user-friendly tool designed to help you create, download, and restore backups of your full hosting account or individual components like email accounts, databases, and home directories. You can access this feature from:

Path:

  • cPanel → Files → Backup

If you're new to managing websites, cPanel also offers a simplified option called Backup Wizard, which guides you through each step.

Backup Format

All cPanel backup files are compressed in .tar.gz format (also known as tarballs), which can be easily stored, moved, or restored.

Note:

  • our hosting provider may enable or disable this feature via WHM (Web Host Manager) under Feature Manager.

Full Account Backup in cPanel

Need a complete snapshot of your website, including databases, files, emails, and configurations? That’s what a Full Account Backup is for.

Here’s how to generate one:
  1. Go to cPanel → Files → Backup
  2. Click on Download a Full Account Backup
  3. You’ll be taken to the Generate a Full Backup page

Select Your Backup Destination

Choose where your backup should be saved:
  1. Home Directory – Save the file directly on your server
  2. Remote FTP Server – Transfer your backup to an external server via FTP
  3. Remote FTP (Passive Mode) – FTP with passive mode (great for firewalled environments)
  4. Secure Copy (SCP) – Send backups over SSH securely

Set Notification Preferences

Want to be notified when your backup is ready? You can:
  1. Enter your email address to get completion alerts
  2. Or choose “Do not send email notification” if preferred

Note:

  • Optional: Include integration links if you need external account credentials bundled with the backup.

Remote Backup Setup

If you choose FTP or SCP, enter the required remote credentials (server address, username, password, port) so cPanel knows where to send the backup file.

Click “Generate Backup”

Once everything’s set, click the Generate Backup button and let cPanel handle the rest.

Restoring From a Full cPanel Backup

Although cPanel lets you generate full backups, restoring them automatically is not supported within cPanel itself. That function is only available in WHM. However, you can still manually restore your files by doing the following:

  1. Download and extract the .tar.gzbackup file on your computer
  2. Navigate to the /homedir/public_htmldirectory
  3. Upload the contents to your server using cPanel → File Manager

Important:

If your hosting account is close to or exceeds its disk quota, the backup process may fail due to insufficient space for essential files.

Why Regular cPanelBackups Matter

  1. Prevent data loss during software updates or migrations
  2. Protect against malware, ransomware, or accidental deletion
  3. Restore full environments instantly without complex configurations
  4. Boost uptime by quickly recovering from issues without downtime

Account Backups in cPanel

If you've already created a full cPanel backup, downloading it is simple. Just select the appropriate backup filename from the Account Backups section.

Important:

Backup files follow this naming format:
backup-MM-DD-YYYY
Where MM is the month, DD is the day, and YYYY is the year.

These complete backup files include everything in your hosting account—from files and databases to email and settings—providing a full restore point.

Partial Backups incPanel

Need to back up or restore just a portion of your website? cPanel also offers Partial Backups, allowing you to download individual components of your account. These files are compressed as .gz archives and are perfect for restoring specific data without affecting the entire site.

Download a Home Directory Backup

Click on Home Directory to download a backup of everything inside your /home directory. This includes:

  • All files you own (e.g., public_html, emails, website data)
  • Files you don’t own but have permission to access

Note:

Files that you neither own nor have permission to access will not be included in the backup.
Want to exclude certain files or folders from the backup? Just add a custom configuration file to your /home directory.

Download a Database Backup

To back up a specific MySQL database, simply click the database name listed under the Databases section. The system will instantly download the selected database as a .gz file.

Backup Email Forwarders

Need to keep a copy of your domain’s email routing setup? Click the domain name under the Forwarders section to download your Email Forwarders configuration.

Backup Email Filters

You can also back up your Email Filters:

  • Click the filter name under System Filter Info
  • This saves a backup of account-level filters configured in Global Email Filters (cPanel → Email → Global Email Filters)

Important:

Filters created at the user-level (via Email Filters) are not included in this backup file.
